Overview of Achievements in Computational Medicine at the Sano Centre Since yesterday (12th September 2023) CBMC23 has taken place at Science Congress Center Munich, Garching, Germany. Sano Science is strongly represented by our researchers.
Sano PhD students visited The University of Sheffield Eleven PhD students from Sano spent a week on a special training program organized by The University of Sheffield, a partner of Sano in the Teaming for Excellence program. Research exchange for PhD students is one of the objectives of the Teaming program, it aims at the active engagement of researchers in the international scientific and innovation community. The educational event for Sano students was organised by the University of Sheffield for the third time. The event took place from 4 to 8 September.
Eight abstracts from Sano accepted to CompBioMed Conference 2023 (CBMC23) CBMC23 is a conference organized by the Centre of Excellence in Computational Biomedicine in Munich. CBMC23 addresses all aspects of the domain of computational biomedicine, from genome through organ to whole human and population levels, embracing data-driven, mechanistic modelling and simulation, machine learning and combinations thereof. Sano will be represented on the CBMC23 also with a wide range of computational topics. In total, eight abstracts produced by Sano scientists were accepted for the conference.
Neuro Summer School 2023 report The second edition of AI Neuro Summer School has just finished, and now we can say that almost a year of preparational work wasn’t in vain!
Sano students are the best Dominika Ciupek, and Julia Machnio, PhD students at the Extreme-scale Data and Computing team, won prestigious awards in the competition organized by TRUMPF Huettinger company, one of the world’s biggest providers of machine tools and laser technology.
Guests from Sheffield University Professor Rod Hose and Professor Pat Lawford from Sheffield University were our guests at the beginning of June. The program of the visit was very rich and, among other events, included a meeting with representatives of The British Embassy in Poland, Mr. James Hughes, Minister-Counsellor for Economic Affairs, and Ms. Dominika Jędrzejak, Economic Diplomacy Support Officer.
Sano at Bio International Convention 2023 in Boston The BIO International Convention is one of the largest and most important events for the biotechnology industry. In 2022, after a 2-year hiatus caused by the COVID 19 pandemic, the event was held in San Diego, California. It was attended by more than 10,000 entrepreneurs from around the world. This year, the event was held in Boston and more than 18,000 participants attended this BIO most important event!
Sano took part in the Cluster LifeScience Kraków Summit Cluster LifeScience Kraków is a foundation supporting entrepreneurship and innovation in the field of life science in Poland. The Cluster is a partner of Sano in the Teaming for Excellence programme. The Cluster supports Sano in coordinating marketing activities and building awareness of Sano in the regional and wider communities.
Sano had Keynote Speech at Automation 2023 Przemysław Korzeniowski’s keynote speech at Automation 2023 conference in Warsaw was highly appreciated by automatics and robotics scientific and engineering communities.
The Congress of the EAES in Rome Sabina Kamińska, a Ph.D. student at the Health Informatics team of Sano, successfully presented the new, improved version of the simulator for training core manual skills for Spina Bifida repair, designed by the team, at the 31st International Congress of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery in Rome, 20-23 June.
Congratulations on a student grant for Filip Katulski We are happy to announce that Filip Katulski, a Junior Scientific Programmer at the Clinical Data Science team, has been awarded a student grant by the 23rd European Agent Systems Summer School (EASSS 2023).
Diversity training at Sano Last Friday, Sano organized an internal event dedicated to Diversity, one of its core values. The training was provided by Diversity Hub, an organization that shares knowledge, experience, and best practices and helps businesses benefit from diversity.
International recognition for Dr. Ahmed Abdeen Hamed Dr. Ahmed Abdeen Hamed, the leader of the Clinical Data Science team, was invited to act as an external examiner for a PhD thesis entitled “Enhanced Heterogeneous Distributed Systems for Healthcare Applications” by a PhD candidate Noura Maghawry in the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Science of The British University in Egypt.
The first Coffee with Sano was intense and nourishing! More than 20 people gathered on Friday evening to talk about future of medicine and healthcare and after 3 hours of discussion nobody wanted to leave! We think, it shows that the new format of networking and communication we presented on 19 of May, i.e., Coffee with Sano, is relevant to needs of many professionals from the field.
Serverless approach as a way to speed up the sensitivity analysis of computational models A research made by Sano scientists was among 58 (out of 280) papers accepted for the 23rd International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud and Internet Computing (CCGrid 2023). We are very proud of this success as CCGrid is a leading forum on the distributed systems topics. The Symposium took place in India, Bangalore, 1-4 May.
Sano at Building Bridges conference in Dresden Last week, Sano Science was represented by dr Anna Maria Trawińska and dr Katarzyna Baliga-Nicholson at the International Building Bridges Conference, hosted by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR).

For doctors who want to build a new, better future Community of Doctors-Innovators or NIL_IN (in Polish: Społeczność Lekarzy Innowatorów) is a new project of the Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists (Naczelna Izba Lekarska).
Two projects from Sano selected for the EIT Jumpstarter program EIT Jumpstarter is the award-winning pre-acceleration programme for scientists, researchers, and innovators, who want to validate their idea and develop business skills so to create and run their own start-up. The strategic aim of this program is to create a sustainable impact in the Central-Eastern and Southern-European regions by boosting innovation and entrepreneurship within this part of Europe.
“Teaming for excellence” partnership in practice The Sano team had a great opportunity to experience the power of the “Teaming for Excellence” program recently. A week ago, we had guests from Fraunhofer ISI, an institution which is our partner and has an aim to help Sano with its integration into the international scientific environment.
