About 40% of these do not have function assigned (dark proteins), hence limiting our understanding of the well-established relationship between the gut microbiome and human health. Following up on these developments, our objective is to construct an integrative view of putative molecular functions and biological roles of proteins from the human gut microbiome by combining deep learning-driven, structure-based function prediction with a large-scale view of the protein universe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":6,"335551620":6,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our large-scale and integrative approach to map and interpret all human gut microbiome proteins, especially those that are difficult to annotate and are thus functionally dark, will lay the groundwork for efficient metagenomic-scale use of this source of biological information.
