Growing evidence on the impact of the human gut microbiome on the onset and progressionof neurological diseases naturally raised questions about mechanisms governing thisrelation. Bidirectional interplay between the gut microbiota and the central nervous systemcan occur via the enteric nervous system or immunological response mechanisms,interactions between neuroactive molecules derived from enteric microbiota with neuronal,immune or neuroendocrine gut-derived proteins. In our work, we focused on the bacterial functional amyloids produced by the gut microbiome which structurally resemble toxic amyloid plaques characteristic for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. We showed that these proteins could be another important actors in the gut-brain axis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
