The&nbsp;funding&nbsp;will&nbsp;support&nbsp;a&nbsp;project&nbsp;titled:&nbsp;\u2018<em>A generative foundation model of the human gut microbiome for digital twin development and biomedical applications<\/em>\u2019 (original pol. \u201cGeneratywny model fundamentalny ludzkiego mikrobiomu jelitowego do tworzenia cyfrowych bli\u017aniak\u00f3w i zastosowa\u0144 biomedycznych\u201d).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">This&nbsp;pioneering&nbsp;initiative&nbsp;aims&nbsp;to&nbsp;build&nbsp;the&nbsp;first&nbsp;generative&nbsp;foundation&nbsp;model of the human gut microbiome, enabling the&nbsp;creation of personalized digital twins for biomedical research, diagnostics, prevention, and therapy optimization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-a-nbsp-breakthrough-in-computational-biology-and-personalized-medicine-nbsp\">A&nbsp;breakthrough in computational biology and personalized medicine&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">The&nbsp;project&nbsp;will&nbsp;develop&nbsp;a&nbsp;next-generation model \u2014 microbiomeGPT \u2014 trained on tens of thousands of metagenomic data points from diverse populations and disease states. Unlike current microbiome analysis tools, microbiomeGPT will:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-d209e4\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">learn\u00a0both\u00a0taxonomic\u00a0and\u00a0functional\u00a0characteristics\u00a0of\u00a0microbial\u00a0communities,\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-4ffebb\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">identify\u00a0biomarkers\u00a0for\u00a0diseases\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0inflammatory\u00a0bowel\u00a0disease,\u00a0colorectal\u00a0cancer,\u00a0diabetes,\u00a0obesit, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and mental health disorders,\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-084efe\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">simulate\u00a0future\u00a0states\u00a0of the\u00a0microbiome\u00a0and\u00a0predict\u00a0the\u00a0effects\u00a0of diet, therapy, or interventions,\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-968b4e\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">generate\u00a0digital\u00a0twins\u00a0of\u00a0patients\u00a0to\u00a0support\u00a0precision\u00a0medicine\u00a0and pharmaceutical R&amp;D.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">This&nbsp;generative,&nbsp;multi-parametric approach has the potential to revolutionize the way clinicians, researchers, and industry understand and manipulate the microbiome.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-international-excellence-and-strategic-partnerships-nbsp\">International excellence and strategic partnerships&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">The&nbsp;project&nbsp;brings&nbsp;together&nbsp;leading&nbsp;research&nbsp;institutions&nbsp;and&nbsp;industry&nbsp;partners:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-8d0306\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Prof.\u00a0Elin\u00a0Org<\/strong>, University of Tartu (Estonia) \u2013\u00a0providing\u00a0access\u00a0to the <strong>Estonian Microbiome Cohort<\/strong> and expertise in population-scale\u00a0microbiome\u00a0studies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-2524b7\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Prof. Ewa Szczurek<\/strong>, Helmholtz\u00a0Munich\u00a0&amp; University of\u00a0Warsaw\u00a0\u2013 advising on deep generative AI models and multi-omics\u00a0integration.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-593478\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Diagnostyka S.A.<\/strong>,\u00a0Poland\u2019s\u00a0largest\u00a0medical\u00a0laboratory\u00a0network \u2013\u00a0supporting translational testing, validation, and\u00a0pathways\u00a0to\u00a0future\u00a0clinical\u00a0application.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Work&nbsp;on the project will be conducted at Sano\u2019s S<a href=\"https:\/\/sano.science\/research-teams\/structural-and-functional-genomics\/\">tructural and Functional Genomics Research Group<\/a>, beginning July&nbsp;1, 2026 and continuing through December 31, 2029.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"h-strengthening-nbsp-ai-for-nbsp-health-nbsp\">Strengthening&nbsp;AI for&nbsp;health&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Dr. Tomasz&nbsp;Ko\u015bci\u00f3\u0142ek\u2014 is a recognized bioinformatician and an expert in microbiome research, and machine learning. His contributions&nbsp;include&nbsp;the development of DeepFRI, Qiita, and numerous high-impact publications across Nature, Nature Communications, Nature Biotechnology, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">His First Team&nbsp;project&nbsp;positions&nbsp;Sano&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;forefront&nbsp;of&nbsp;global&nbsp;efforts&nbsp;to&nbsp;build&nbsp;AI-driven biological models, aligning with European priorities in digital health, precision&nbsp;medicine, and computational simulation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote eplus-wrapper is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">K.
