Fields such as psychology, sociology, and economics increasingly rely on complex data analysis, yet many findings prove difficult to reproduce when studies are repeated. The authors set out to investigate why this happens. As the paper explains, “The same dataset can be analyzed in different justifiable ways to answer the same research question, potentially challenging the robustness of empirical science.” The study was designed to test how strongly research results depend on the analytical choices scientists make when working with the same data.

An international investigation further shows that when independent researchers reanalyse data from previously conducted studies, they reach different conclusions in roughly two-thirds of cases. As the authors note, “Even when scientists ask the same question of the same data, their answers can diverge in meaningful ways.”

As part of the project, nearly 500 independent experts from different countries reanalysed data from 100 previously published studies in the social and behavioural sciences. Although they examined the same data and addressed the same research questions as the authors of the original studies, they were free to choose their own analytical methods. Reflecting on this process, the researchers highlight that differences in analytical approaches are an inherent part of scientific practice and should be carefully considered and appropriately managed when interpreting results.

Cemal Koba from Sano was among the researchers involved in the project. He first analysed the data and then examined how other scientists approached analysing the same datasets, comparing their methods and analytical decisions. Like the other analysts, he is listed as a co-author of the Nature publication, reflecting the uniquely collaborative nature of this large-scale effort.

A Global Experiment in Scientific Analysis

The scale of the project was extraordinary. Nearly 900 scientists from around the world collaborated to analyse data from 100 studies published between 2009 and 2018 in the social and behavioural sciences.

To conduct the experiment, nearly 500 independent analysts were given the same raw datasets and the same research question derived from each study. However, each analyst was free to choose their own analytical approach. They could decide how to process the data, which statistical models to use, and which methods to apply in order to test the original claim.

This large-scale collaboration made it possible to answer a question that would have been impossible for a single research team to address: what happens when many scientists independently analyze the same data?

The result was striking—different analysts often arrived at different conclusions, even though they started with the same information.

The Same Data, Different Results

One of the most surprising findings of the study was that only about 49% of previously published claims could be successfully replicated, meaning that similar conclusions were obtained when the same data were analysed again.

Why does this happen? The answer lies in the many choices researchers must make during the analytical process.

Scientists may define variables differently, prepare and clean datasets in different ways, or construct alternative statistical models. They might also rely on different computational tools or software packages. Even the framework used to interpret results can vary. Some researchers rely on traditional frequentist statistics, while others use Bayesian approaches or likelihood-based inference. Increasingly, analysts also employ machine learning techniques or computational modelling.

Each of these decisions can influence the final outcome, as even seemingly routine analytical choices may accumulate and lead to substantial differences in results. Something as simple as applying a different method for filtering data, choosing alternative criteria for selecting observations, or running the analysis in a different statistical program can produce noticeably different results.

Transparency Makes Research More Reliable

Despite these challenges, the study also identified a powerful way to improve the reliability of scientific findings: greater transparency in research practices.

When authors share not only their conclusions but also the raw data and the analytical code used to generate their results, the probability that other researchers can reproduce their findings increases dramatically—from 74% to as much as 91%. As the authors argue, “transparency does not eliminate uncertainty, but it makes it visible and easier to evaluate.”

This suggests that openness in science—through data sharing, reproducible workflows, and collaborative verification—can significantly strengthen the credibility of research outcomes.

Rethinking Objectivity in Science

Perhaps the most important lesson from the project is that scientific objectivity does not necessarily mean that there is one single correct interpretation of a dataset. Instead, the study highlights that multiple reasonable analytical paths may exist, each potentially leading to slightly different conclusions.

Recognizing this complexity is essential. By documenting and comparing different analytical choices, researchers can better understand how results emerge and how robust they really are.

Why This Study Matters

Reliable evidence is the foundation of scientific progress. In the social and behavioural sciences, research findings often influence public debate, policy decisions, and media narratives. For this reason, it is crucial that such findings are as robust and trustworthy as possible.

The study presented in Investigating the analytical robustness of the social and behavioural sciences demonstrates just how strongly results can depend on analytical decisions made by researchers. At the same time, it points to a clear path forward: greater openness, collaboration, and transparency in the research process.

Large collaborative projects like this one—bringing together hundreds of scientists, including analysts such as Cemal Koba from Sano – show that understanding the limits of scientific methods can ultimately make science stronger.

The article is the result of an international research collaboration led by Dr. Balázs Aczél and Dr. Barnabás Szászi from Eötvös Loránd University and Corvinus University of Budapest.
