The proposed treatment does not fully stop the disease, as we still do not completely understand its etiology. Although multiple studies point towards the role of the human gut microbiome in neurodegeneration, its exact role remains a mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The bioinformaticians from Sano Centre for Personalized Medicine, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Malopolska Centre for Biotechnology, in international collaboration with Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences in Gottingen, joined forces to study <em><strong>how<\/strong><\/em> the microbiome could affect neurodegeneration. They approached the problem from a unique perspective that focused on the aggregating proteins produced by the human gut microbiome. Protein aggregation phenomena is traditionally associated with the neurodegenerative changes in the brain, but recent work showed that some bacteria can also produce protein aggregates. This interesting observation fueled the study which focused on the presence of so-called bacterial functional amyloids in the human gut microbiome, which are purposefully produced by bacteria e.g. to form biofilm matrices that protect them from the environment. The computational analysis served to generate novel hypotheses on the Parkinson\u2019s disease etiology. It seems that bacterial functional amyloids are widely present in the human gut microbiome, their occurrence correlates with Parkinson&#8217;s disease and they might have the potential to trigger the immune response.
