None of this is a mystery to physics. Yet most artificial intelligence systems have to discover such rules from scratch, by sifting through mountains of data. So what would happen if we simply taught AI what science already knows? That was the question at the centre of the tenth episode of Twin Things Podcast, “Can AI Learn the Rules of the Human Body?”, which premiered on the Sano Science YouTube channel on 25 September 2026.

Host Katarzyna Baliga-Nicholson talked with Elena Gómez del Pozo from Sano about the meeting point of physics, medicine and artificial intelligence. Their starting point was a problem that anyone working with clinical information knows well. Unlike the vast collections of images and text used to train popular AI tools, healthcare data is often scarce, incomplete or messy, and it can be difficult to access and use. An algorithm that learns only from such data can easily draw the wrong conclusions.

Physics-informed AI offers a clever way around this. Instead of letting a model guess everything on its own, researchers build into it the rules we already know to be true, from gravity and the conservation of mass to the laws that describe how blood moves through the heart. The result is a hybrid model that learns from data while respecting the laws of nature, which makes it more reliable precisely where data is lacking. As the conversation showed, this approach is especially promising for complex, self-regulating systems such as the human body, with its delicate balance known as homeostasis, and for building heart models and digital twins, virtual replicas of organs or patients that can be used to test scenarios safely on a computer.

The episode was not only about equations and algorithms. Elena also spoke about her own path in science, about women in STEM and about what it takes to step into a new field and find your place in it. The conversation closed on an idea that lies at the heart of computational medicine: the future of medical AI may depend not only on collecting more data, but on finding smarter ways of combining data with scientific knowledge.

Twin Things Podcast explores how scientists, engineers and creatives use simulations and digital twins to understand the real world.
