Sano Engages at the 33rd Economic Forum

The 33rd Economic Forum, a significant economic and political gathering in Central and Eastern Europe, took place with the theme ‘Time for New Leaders: Shaping the Future Together’. Attracting over 6,000 attendees from Poland and other regions, the forum featured 350 debates, six plenary sessions, and numerous panels, workshops, and special events. One of the highlights was the AI Forum, conducted in cooperation with the Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs and prominent Polish universities, which examined the profound impacts of artificial intelligence on societal changes and various public and commercial sectors. The discussions explored both the challenges AI presents to the market and its potential to enhance the competitiveness and security of the European Union.

The debate ‘Artificial Intelligence – Quo Vadis?’, with participants Katarzyna Baliga-Nicholson and Michał Kosobudzki from Sano, centered on the future of AI, including its challenges, new opportunities, and ethical considerations.

Addressing AI Hallucinations and Ethical Considerations

Katarzyna discussed a pragmatic shift in attitudes toward AI, emphasizing its role in automating mundane tasks. She brought attention to the phenomenon of ‘AI hallucinations’ — distortions arising from AI systems trained on internet data of varying quality. She argued that tackling these issues should begin at the start of technology development. Michał Kosobudzki, Sano’s Data Protection Officer, used hypothetical court cases to illustrate the problems of ‘AI hallucinations’. He highlighted the legal implications of AI technologies, drawing attention to the newly enacted AIACT legal framework by the European Parliament, with potential effects akin to those of the GDPR. Michał also emphasized the need to integrate ethical considerations early in the development of technology.

The debate, led by Prof. Maciej Jaworski from the Cracow University of Technology and featuring contributions from Marcin Chrząszcz of Akamai Technologies Poland and Prof. Ryszard Tadeusiewicz from AGH University, revisited the critical issue of data quality necessary for effective AI operation, highlighting ongoing concerns about data reliability.

The event also saw the introduction of the ‘SGH and Economic Forum 2024 Report,’ an in-depth economic analysis focusing on Poland and Central and Eastern European nations, authored by specialists from the Warsaw School of Economics. This report sheds light on prevailing socio-economic trends and supports decision-making across diverse sectors.

Healthcare Forum and Its Impact

For fifteen years, the forum has consistently hosted the Healthcare Forum, which focuses on the economic dimensions of health and attracts leading figures from the medical community across Poland and Europe. A traditional feature of the forum is the presentation of awards by the Forum Program Council to outstanding individuals, companies, and organizations in various categories, such as Person of the Year and Company of the Year.
