During the opening day of the 5th Eastern European Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics Workshop (EEBG), participants had the chance to see how the future of data‑driven biology is being built in Kraków – directly from the perspective of Sano and Gaia AI Factory.
Maciej Malawski from Sano delivered a lecture titled “AI Factories: Connecting Cloud and HPC for Bioinformatics and Genomics”, showing how new national‑scale infrastructures like Gaia AI Factory in Kraków link supercomputers with cloud‑native tools familiar to AI and bioinformatics teams.
In his talk, he explained why this hybrid approach matters: bioinformatics and genomics increasingly rely on workflows that must be both extremely powerful and easy to use, so researchers can analyse large cohorts, multi‑omics datasets and complex models without worrying about the technical divide between traditional HPC centres and modern cloud platforms.

By illustrating concrete scenarios – from large‑scale genomic pipelines to AI‑assisted analysis in medicine – Maciej showed EEBG participants that Gaia AI Factory is more than “just” a new supercomputer: it is an ecosystem combining hardware, software and expert support, designed to accelerate cutting‑edge research in biology and healthcare and to make advanced AI and HPC resources accessible to the wider scientific community in Central and Eastern Europe.
