Olav Zimmermann

Olav Zimmermann is a computational biologist and bioinformatician and avsenior staff scientist at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC).
Since 2008 he has been leading the Simulation and Data Laboratory Biology (SDL Biology) at JSC, a dedicated support and research unit withva focus on the development of HPC methods for biomolecular simulation.
Olav obtained his diploma and PhD in biology from the Universoty of Cologne with a focus on molecular genetics and bioinformatics and did avPostDoc at the CoE for Bioinformatics of the State University New Yorkvat Buffalo. He also has an entrepreneurial past as a cofounder andvdirector of the former bioinformatics startup Science Factory.
Olav serves as representative of Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) on Sano’s Foundation Council and coordinates the contributions the Sano
project of both, FZJ and its linked third party, the AIA institute of the Aachen Technical University (RWTH).
Olav’s main scientific interests are the integration of machine learning and physics based simulation, highly scalable methods for data analysis, and bottom-up synthetic biology.
