On February 18-19, 2025, Prof. Alfons Hoekstra, the new chairperson of Sano’s International Scientific Committee (ISC), and Prof. Peter Sloot, newly appointed member of the ISC, visited the Centre for Computational Medicine in Kraków. The two-day visit provided a comprehensive overview of Sano’s ongoing research, its strategic direction, and the role the ISC will play in shaping its future.

A Comprehensive Introduction and Strategic Discussions

The visit began with an introductory session led by Maciej Malawski (Head of Sano), Magdalena Chrzanowska (General Manager), Tomasz Gubała (Chief Strategy Officer), and Marian Bubak (Scientific Affairs Director). This session outlined the current and planned activities of Sano’s research teams and provided updates on the Research Agenda following recent ISC meetings.

A key highlight of the visit was a brainstorming session focused on the concept of holistic over- and under-the-skin computational medicine. Engaging discussions between the ISC members and Sano’s researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and operations teams explored the centre’s evolving needs and the potential role of interdisciplinary computational approaches in healthcare.

In-Depth Engagement with Research Teams

Professors Hoekstra and Sloot participated in a series of meetings with Sano’s research groups, offering valuable insights and guidance. They met with:

The Extreme-Scale Data and Computing Team (led by Maciej Malawski)

The Scientific Programming Team (led by Piotr Nowakowski)

The Computational Neuroscience Team (led by Jan K. Argasiński)

The Personal Health Data Science Team (led by José Sousa)

The Structural and Functional Genomics Team (led by Tomasz Kościółek)

The Health Informatics Team (led by Przemysław Korzeniowski)

Additionally, the ISC members had a dedicated discussion with doctoral student Joan Falco-Roget, providing advice on PhD research and academic development.

Strengthening the Role of the ISC

The meetings were rich in discussions, enabling the research teams to receive expert support while allowing Professors Hoekstra and Sloot to gain a deeper understanding of Sano’s structure, research priorities, and strategic objectives. As new leaders of the International Scientific Committee, their insights will help guide Sano’s scientific direction, ensuring continued excellence in computational medicine.

The visit concluded with a wrap-up session, where key takeaways were discussed with Marian Bubak and Magdalena Chrzanowska. As Sano continues to grow as an international research hub, the engagement of the ISC will be instrumental in driving innovation and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
