Gaia AI Factory: The Second AI Factory in Poland to Be Built in Krakow
Sano Centre for Computational Medicine joins the national consortium to foster trusted AI development in health, space, and language technologies.
A New Hub for Trusted Artificial Intelligence in Europe
Krakow is set to host Poland’s second AI Factory – the Gaia AI Factory, a new European centre dedicated to developing trusted and human-centred artificial intelligence.
Led by the Academic Computer Centre CYFRONET AGH, the initiative unites a national consortium of research institutions, technology partners, and innovation hubs — including Sano – Centre for Computational Medicine.
Together, we aim to create an open ecosystem that accelerates AI innovation in healthcare, space technologies, and large language models (LLMs).
This €70 million project is co-funded by Poland and the European Union through the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), marking a major milestone for Poland’s position on the European AI and supercomputing map.
Gaia AI Factory: A New Generation of AI Infrastructure
A state-of-the-art supercomputer, optimised for artificial intelligence workloads, will power the Gaia AI Factory.
Located in Krakow and managed by CYFRONET AGH, the system will deliver computing performance several times higher than that of Poland’s current fastest supercomputer, Helios.
The infrastructure will support the full AI development lifecycle — from data preparation and model training to deployment and evaluation — enabling researchers, businesses, and public institutions to develop ethical, transparent, and high-performance AI solutions.
Through this platform, the consortium will provide AI training programmes, advisory services, and talent development initiatives to strengthen digital skills and ensure that AI innovation remains accessible to all.

Building a National and European AI Ecosystem
The Gaia AI Factory consortium brings together leading institutions from across Poland:
- Academic Computer Centre CYFRONET AGH
- Faculty of Space Technologies at the AGH University of Krakow
- Wrocław Supercomputing and Networking Center, Wrocław University of Science and Technology
- TASK Computing Center, Gdańsk University of Technology
- Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw
- National Centre for Nuclear Research
- NASK – National Research Institute
- OPI PIB – National Information Processing Institute
- Centre for Computational Medicine
- Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University
- Institute of Mother and Child
- Krakow Technology Park

By combining computing power, data resources, and expert knowledge, the consortium will create a robust foundation for the future of AI research and innovation in Poland.
Sano’s Role: Advancing AI in Healthcare
As a member of the Gaia AI Factory consortium, Sano will contribute its expertise in computational medicine, explainable AI, and human-centric design.
Our mission within the project is to ensure that AI technologies developed within this ecosystem are not only effective and scalable but also trustworthy, transparent, and beneficial to society.
At Sano, we believe that the future of AI in healthcare lies at the intersection of data science, ethics, and patient-centred innovation. Gaia AI Factory provides a unique opportunity to turn this vision into practice on a European scale.
Looking Ahead: Krakow as a European AI Capital
Gaia AI Factory will closely collaborate with its counterparts — PIAST AI Factory in Poznań and LUMI AI Factory in Finland — forming part of a distributed European network of AI excellence centres.
Together, these initiatives will strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty in artificial intelligence and provide a strong foundation for developing future AI gigafactories.
With the launch of Gaia AI Factory, Krakow becomes a central hub of AI development in Europe, combining academic expertise, technological innovation, and a commitment to ethical, responsible AI.
