PRIME grant awarded to our team

We’re proud to announce that Magdalena Otta, Katarzyna Baliga-Nicholson, and Dominik Czaplicki have been awarded a PRIME grant for their innovative project:  Digital twin of blood flow: computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in personalised treatment – application in optimising therapy for deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Transforming DVT treatment with a Digital Twin simulation tool

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower limb is a serious condition involving abnormal clot formation that blocks blood circulation. Each year, 50–100 people per 100,000 experience their first symptomatic DVT. Up to 50% of patients go on to develop post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS)—a long-term complication that significantly reduces quality of life and places a heavy burden on healthcare systems.

Despite the risks, current treatment strategies often use a “one-size-fits-all” approach, overlooking the unique venous anatomy and individual blood flow dynamics of each patient. This leads to suboptimal decisions and increased long-term complications.

We’re tackling this challenge by developing a Digital Twin-based simulation tool powered by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) that:

  • Uses individual patient data
  • Builds a personalized model of blood flow
  • Provides predictive haemodynamic insights, including thrombosis risk biomarkers derived from simulated flow patterns

Integration with clinical practice

  • The software is designed to work within existing clinical workflows, helping vascular surgeons optimize treatment strategies and reduce long-term complications like PTS.
  • Early validation studies confirm the feasibility and clinical relevance of this approach, and expert feedback supports its real-world application.

Thank You to FNP

We’re very grateful to the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) for supporting our project through the PRIME programme. We are honoured to be part of this initiative and excited to accelerate the journey from research to real-world impact.

What is PRIME?

PRIME is an acceleration programme launched by the Foundation for Polish Science to support the commercialisation of high-potential scientific innovations. It helps research teams bring their ideas from lab to life through expert mentoring, commercialisation training, and financial support.

In the first PRIME competition, 18 outstanding teams were selected to develop their innovations over the coming months, turning bold research into market-ready solutions
