Professor Wiesław Nowiński, senior postdoc researcher at Sano, a scientist renowned as a creator of world-famous human brain atlases, proposed a brand-new method of sulcal presentation. The method employs the inner cortical surface for sulci examination from the inside of the cerebrum. The study is reported in the Journal of Anatomy.

AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków is opening the largest Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence in Poland. On this occasion, Sano is invited to give several AI workshops for the students.

“Computation at the Cutting Edge of Science” - it is a slogan of the International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS 2023), an A-rank conference in the CORE classification. Since 2001, ICCS annually brings together researchers and scientists from mathematics and computer science, as well as from other areas pioneering computational methods in science. Average attendance of the conference each year is about 350 participants. Submission of papers and participation in this event is an important achievement for scientists.

Easter is a symbol of human victory over death, it shows how much we desire immortality and eternal life. Yet, immortality is still a problematic topic, medicine is now making huge progress toward extending the human lifespan and improving quality of life. Computational medicine is one of the biggest drivers of those processes.

Agus Hartoyo and Rosmary Blanco, researchers from the Computer Vision Data Science team of Sano, took part in the fifth edition of Brainhack Warsaw. The main idea of the event was to communicate and share knowledge on data mining, machine learning and brain research by working on neuroscience-related projects in teams. 

On The International Day of Mathematics, we’d like to share the interview with Professor Marek Michalewicz, the author and the leader of the project which connected supercomputers on four continents in seven countries into one concurrent configuration of the resources of the "Supercomputer Galaxy" (InfiniCortex project). Professor Michalewicz was a Visiting Professor at Sano in 2022 and we had the opportunity to ask him some questions.  

Researchers from the Computer Vision Data Science Team at Sano and the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Warsaw have successfully applied quantum computing techniques to discover structure in brain networks.

Gamification of medical applications seems to be inevitable to keep users involved in the process of self-reporting. It is widely accepted that gamification design should be personalized, and there are several approaches to categorizing users for the sake of providing them with the most encouraging design.

The end of February was marked by SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE23), an important meeting for computational science researchers. This year conference gathered about 2000 attendees in Amsterdam.

Data Science and Medicine are two different fields of knowledge and practice, the one very young, the other rather old, do they have something in common to be able to cooperate and benefit from each other?   

For Fat Thursday in Sano there were announced donuts (which is traditional in Poland) and a discussion about ChatGPT (which is because we like to discuss something important then we meet). We don’t know which of the items brought more of our colleagues to the office that day, but it was really nice to see so many enthusiastic faces in one place.

Dominika Ciupek’s thesis won the first prize in the category of applied science in prestigious scientific AGH competition “Diamenty AGH”. Dominika presented her thesis on "Mapping the properties of white matter pathways of the ageing brain using the diffusion magnetic resonance imaging" which she developed under supervision of Tomasz Pięciak, Ph.D. and Jaromir Przybyło, Ph.D. In Sano Dominika continues her research under supervision of professor Maciej Malawski in Extreme-scale Data and Computing Team and supervision of Tomasz Pięciak, PhD from Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación, Universidad de Valladolid (Spain).

Last week we had honor to host Ewa Deelman, research professor from University of Southern California and we had wonderful opportunity to consult with her our computational medicine projects.

Time to celebrate! Last Friday, January 20th, four Sano Science students: Adam Nowak, Krzysztof Gądek, Piotr Kica, and Karol Zając defended their thesis and received Engineer's degrees!

December is a wonderful time to look around and find ways how to help others. In Sano, we decided to join our forces and help the school for blind children in Kraków which – unfortunately - is struggling financially.  

Alfredo Ibias from Jose Sousa research group (Personal Health Data Science) met with professor Suphamit Chittayasothorn from KMITL School of Information Technology.  

From the 28th to the 30th of November Alfredo Ibias form Personal Health Data Science research team  participated in the 14th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS 2022). He presented a paper entitled “Using deep learning to detect anomalies in traffic flow”.
