Sano on digital twins in the special issue of “DOMENA”

To mark its 45th anniversary, the Polish Information Processing Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Informatyczne, PTI) has organised the conference “Informatics 2026 through the eyes of PTI – achievements, perspectives, challenges” (Polish: „Informatyka 2026 oczami PTI – dokonania, perspektywy, wyzwania”) and released a special issue of its journal “DOMENA” (2/2026), fully devoted to the conference themes.

All contributions – prepared in Polish – are available online at pti.org.pl/domena.

This issue features an article prepared by the team at Sano Centre for Computational Medicine. The text, titled “Digital twins in important practical applications – medicine and life sciences” (Polish: „Cyfrowe bliźniaki w ważnych praktycznych zastosowaniach (medycyna, nauki o życiu)”), was written by Maciej Malawski, Director of Sano, and Magdalena Otta, a Postdoctoral Researcher specialising in modelling biomedical processes.

The authors explain what patient digital twins are and show how the combination of mathematical models, large‑scale computing (high‑performance computing, HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) can support diagnostics, therapy planning and the development of new treatment methods. The article emphasises the importance of model personalisation, rigorous validation and uncertainty quantification (VVUQ – verification, validation and uncertainty quantification), as well as the use of modern computational infrastructure in medicine and life sciences. It also highlights Sano’s role in the European digital twin ecosystem, in the context of initiatives such as the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH Society), the Swedish Digital Twin Consortium, European Commission projects developing platform for digital twin research, and concrete activities in Poland, for example the “Digital Patient” (Polish: Cyfrowy Pacjent – Zdrowe Społeczeństwo) roadmap prepared by the LifeScience Cluster with the involvement of Sano.

The authors outline a future in which every patient has a virtual counterpart, continuously updated with data from clinical examinations and sensors, and clinical decisions are supported by simulations of different treatment scenarios.

Maciej Malawski’s talk at the PTI conference

The topic of digital twins will also feature in the programme of the “Informatics 2026 through the eyes of PTI – achievements, perspectives, challenges” conference. During the thematic session “Modern computing in practice”, Maciej Malawski will give a talk titled “Digital twins in important practical applications” (Polish: „Cyfrowe bliźniaki w ważnych praktycznych zastosowaniach”). By combining a publication in PTI’s nationwide journal „DOMENA” and a conference presentation, Sano’s perspective on the development of digital twins will reach both the readers of „DOMENA” and the informatics community gathered at the PTI 45th Anniversary Conference.
