Sano PhD Students With “Diamenty AGH” Awards

We have another proof that Sano attracts the best young scientists, as for the second time in a row our PhD students receive a high acknowledgment from their alma mater, AGH University, by winning a competition for the best master’s thesis “Diamenty AGH” (Diamonds of AGH).

Szymon Mazurek’s thesis “Epilepsy Seizure Detection and Dynamical Brain Connectivity via Machine Learning” won the second prize in the category of applied science this year! The research was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Maciej Malawski and Dr. Alessandro Crimi.

Today Szymon continues his studies as a PhD student at the Computer Vision team of Sano, led by Dr. Alessandro Crimi. A paper “Leveraging graph neural network for explainable EEG classification in epileptic patients” with the latest results of Szymon’s work was recently accepted for ISBI 2024 (IEEE Symposium on Biomedical Imaging).

Moreover, the first prize in the category of theoretical science this year was given to Julia Machnio. Julia had a scholarship at Sano in 2022-2023 and provided her research under the supervision of their promotor Dr. Tomek Pieciak and and supporting mentor Dr. Maciej Malawski. Currently, she continues her study at the Pionieer Center for AI in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In 2023, the first prize in the category of applied science won Dominika Ciupek’s thesis “Mapping the Properties of White Matter Pathways of the Ageing Brain Using the Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging”.

Congratulations to all the winners!
