Supercomputer Prometheus supports Sano in the fight against coronavirus

We are pleased to invite you to read the article about the Polish supercomputer called Prometheus: "Prometejskie nadzieje w czasie pandemii" (Promethean hopes during a pandemic), published in the online magazine “Artificial Intelligence”.

Prometheus, located in the Academic Computer Centre “Cyfronet” of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, supports Sano – Centre for Computational Medicine, in the creation of new, computational disease biomarkers, individualized for each patient. In addition to its core business, Sano has made a number of efforts to combat the COVID-19 virus by using artificial intelligence methods to predict disease progression in people diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The system developed by the centre is designed to help identify patients with the highest risk of a rapid deterioration of health, which may translate into a change in the treatment strategy and, consequently, reduce the risk of a significant deterioration of health.

Supercomputer Prometheus is used, among others, in research related to the modelling of drug molecules, for analyzing data from DNA microarrays, identifying proteins and learning about their role in biological processes. The computing power of the computer is estimated at 2.65 petaflops, thanks to which it took 288th place in the June TOP500 list of the fastest super machines in the world. Weighing about 40 tons, Prometheus consists of 144 computing servers, thus ensuring excellent energy efficiency among computers of its class.
